Scholarly Communication Symposium

Valerie Horton is the Director of Minitex, a Minnesota-based library consortia.  Prior to that, Valerie was the first director at the Colorado Library Consortium, Library Director for Colorado Mesa University, Head of Systems at New Mexico State University, and a Systems Librarian at Brown University.  She received an ALA International Fellowship to automate libraries in the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago. Valerie also co-authored 2 books for ALA Editions and was co-general editor for Collaborative Librarianship. In 2018, she was awarded the ALA ASCLA Leadership and Professional Achievement Award.

Riding the BHAG: At-Scale Scholarly Publishing and Self-Publishing 

The Minnesota Libraries Publishing Project launched less than two-years ago with the audacious goal of libraries transforming the publishing landscape in Minnesota. The national publishing landscape is evolving, and our librarians wanted a place to learn and experiment in the field.  Minitex’ chose to focus on shared infrastructure, at-scale tools, and support for for scholarly writers, local historians, and self-published authors.  With 500 books and counting, our rodeo has only just begun…
